| The workplace culture of smoking |
Researchers studying smokers found that the culture of the workplace affects their motivation and success at quitting smoking.
Blue-collar workers in New England factories felt less pressure to quit and less support for quitting than other workers. They also found greater acceptance of smoking among their co-workers, the research revealed.
Those factors were closely linked to their likelihood of giving up the habit.
The study shows why smoking and smoking cessation rates differ among various occupational categories, the researchers concluded.
The study was conducted by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and its results were published in the current issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion.
